Kenyan farm workers take legal action against Finlays

A Scottish firm that provides tea for major supermarkets is facing legal action following allegations that conditions for plantation workers in Kenya resulted in permanent damage to their spines.

James Finlay (Kenya) Ltd is a tea company based in Aberdeen which employs workers in Kenya to pick tea which is then sold in supermarkets including Tesco and Sainsbury's and the company also supplies Starbucks.

Patrick McGuire from Scottish law firm Thompsons Solicitors has applied to represent the tea pickers in the Court of Session.

The Kenyan workers, who are seeking compensation and medical care, also claim that the company routinely administered painkillers to allow workers to carry on picking. The tea company is also being accused in Kenya of exploiting tea-pickers with low rates of pay.
